The Mt. Pleasant Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is promoting community pride with a new initiative to show support for Central Michigan University‘s (CMU) football team during home games. The idea sparked after Executive Director of the Mt. Pleasant Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Chris Rowley, attended the Freeland Walleye Festival.

“I went through a drive-thru and the employee had a t-shirt on for the festival,” says Rowley. “And I went, ‘I want this in my town someday.’”

After recruiting the help of the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce, CMU Admissions staff, and other volunteers, 500 buttons were distributed to local businesses ahead of CMU’s home game on Saturday, Sept. 25, to support the university’s football team during game days and show some community pride.

Some larger companies and chains that operate in Mt. Pleasant, such as Celebration Cinema, are also participating in the initiative.

Rowley says the purpose of the buttons is to “sprinkle maroon and gold over Mt. Pleasant.” She says they are hoping to distribute more buttons and also incorporate game day t-shirts.

“We’re all supportive of Central Michigan University, its impact, and what it does for this community, and so a little bit of maroon and gold sprinkled at the hotels, restaurants, and attractions is what we’re trying to do this year,” says Rowley.
