Art WalkCentral, a community wide art competition and exhibit sponsored by Art Reach of Mid Michigan, will take place throughout Mt. Pleasant from August 7 through 28, 2013.  More than 100 artists from throughout Michigan and beyond will display their art work in Mt. Pleasant stores, art galleries, public spaces and businesses.

Artist Lorna Poulos has entered a sculpture you will find downtown at town center.  The piece features a tree with flowing “leaves” and a butterfly.  The unique feature of the butterfly sculpture is the pinwheel addition.  Walk up to the piece and spin the wheel, when you look through the pinwheel the colors change in the wings of the butterfly making this a creative addition to the month long event.

Visitors of the event may participate by voting for their favorite art entries.  The artists receiving the most votes will win a cash prize.  Voters must register before voting; voter registration may be done on line at http://www.artwalkcentral.com/.  Voting begins at 9 a.m. on August 7 and ends at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27.  Winners will be announced on Wednesday, August 28 at the Art Reach Auction for the Benefit of the Arts fundraiser.

Pieces of art can be found throughout Mt. Pleasant; inside stores, the Art museum of Central Michigan University‘s campus, and the Ziibiwing Center.  Photographer Kelli Walton’s collage of photos can be found at the locally owned Max & Emily’s Eatery and features 11 different babies all under 10 days old.  “It’s a celebration of new life and parenthood,” said Walton.  Walton won second place last year and had great things to say about this years entries.  “This year Art Walk Central has really increased the quality or art.  there is more sculptures and interactive art.”

“The month of August is all about the ART!” stated Kathryn Hill, Executive Director of Art Reach of Mid Michigan.  “We’re excited about the quality of art entered in this year’s event. We have several outdoor sculpture pieces that are sure to ignite curiosity.”

Have you seen Big Foot?  He is waiting for you at City Hall.  the larger than life piece was created by artist Justin La Doux of Alma, Michigan and is made entirely with recycled metal.

Registration and voting has already begun for this event.  You can register from now until August 26th and the last day of voting is August 27th.  One of the volunteers at registration is CMU student Kara Kinsman.  Kinsman has been interning with Art Reach this summer and wanted to get a feel for the event.  “I hope to run a studio one day and I thought I would get a lot of experience and see how a large event like this is run,” said Kinsman.
“It’s the second day and we have more than 230 people registered and voting already,” added Kinsman.Be sure to come and check out all the artist works and the added weekend events to really get into the mood and experience all Art Walk Central has to offer here in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
